What is the Young Futurists Project?
The Young Futurists Project (YFP) is a youth-driven, innovation hub impacting the culture of health through technology, social solutions, and creativity. Using the S.T.E.A.M. approach, YFP seeks to provide training to students in workforce development as well as foundational and personal skills. YFP primarily serves youth ages 13-18 during afterschool and ages 8-18 during our summer camp and supports youth technologists, creative innovators, and advocates with skills to address the current and future emerging issues. The program was launched in January 2020.
Registration is FREE for JPS Students and SNAP/ TANF recipients. A $100 monthly fee is required for all other students. Limited slots are available. The program is now open for enrollment and applications can be submitted here. For more information, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Young Futurists Project is funded by the Mississippi Department of Human Services, Hardin, and Robert Wood Johnson Foundations.
Young Futurists in Action
Summer 2022 presented a fun-filled, futuristic experience for Young Futurists campers as they explored dozens of new life skills and career paths. Scholars from all across the Jackson metro area filled the corridors of the Jackson Medical Mall to partake in the ultimate S.T.E.A.M experience.
More than 30 youth, ages 8 -18, participated in a wide variety of course offerings from virtual reality and artificial intelligence to culinary, visual, and performing arts, creative content, foreign language, quilting and sewing, dance, entrepreneurial training, strategic foresight and more!
Student volunteers collectively received thousands of dollars in stipends to help offset back-to-school expenses, all while gaining valuable work experience and community service hours, along with the opportunity to participate in camp activities.
The Young Futurists Project is just one of several initiatives spearheaded by the Jackson Medical Mall Foundation, geared toward achieving JMMF’s overarching mission, “eliminating healthcare disparities holistically through the promotion of creativity and innovation.”
